| www |
World Wide Web
(or Internet or Net or Web) |
This is a network of computers joined via wire and satellite links.
Like the huge invisible latitude and longitude grid |
| Website |
A site (place) on the web |
This is a place where a specific set of information (data, media etc) can be stored and can be accessed via browser software from anywhere in the world. Once a website is set up it is like an virtual house, with one or more rooms. |
| Web page |
One 'page' of information (data and/or images) on a website. |
Some websites are just a single page, others are like a book with numerous pages. Web pages are not a set length. This is determined by the website owner
|
| Navigation Bar / Tools |
Basically like an index in a book, or a menu in a restaurant |
The navigation tool helps a visitor to a website 'navigate' or find their way around the website.
Like sub-sections of a chapter in a reference book, main navigation links, can open up to show secondary links to sub-pages in a section |
| Website Builder |
Usually refers to the software that creates the website |
There are a number of programs used to build a web page or website |
| Web-developer |
A expert technician who has the skills to develop a website to the specifications required |
Usually a person who understands the mathematical coding required to construct a website, how to use specific website building software, and the coding required for more complex functions to be added to a website eg. e_commerce links to banks, forums, etc |
| IT Graphic Designer |
A person with skills in creating the overall 'look and feel' of a website |
This professional can map out the logos, imaginary, colours, text and style of a website to suit its target audience and the owners intent. Usually not skilled at the 'technical' behind-the-scenes coding of the web-developer.
Good website usually require the skills of both |
| Website Templates |
Pre-set coding in website building software |
Usually templates limit the design and/ or other aspects of the website construction, to limit/ economise the amount of work required to build a website.
For example CMS (content management system) software and templates allows people with relatively few IT skills to work on website building and/ or changes
CMS website software allows templates that determine the look and feel of a website (graphic design) to change, whilst 'managing' the 'content' ie the content stays the same without the need for its repeated input.
|
| Domain Name |
The name (or address) of the place/ area/ domain where a website can be found on the web.
eg www.frankswindows.com.au
This domain name says that on the world wide web (www) one will find a commercial activity (com) in Australia (au) called franks windows |
A Domain Name is like a House Name plaque, that one buys for a specific period of time.
It signifies one has the right place, and acts like a front door of a mobile home (website)
If the Domain Name has no website behind it, the internet will say there is nothing there.
Like a House Name on a mobile home (website),
* the Domain Name stays constant not matter which ISP or Hosting company one uses
* can be the doorway to a small site (one page home) or a huge many roomed house. |
| URL |
Uniform Resource Locator |
An Internet address (for example, http://www.hmco.com/trade/), usually consisting of the access protocol (http), the domain name (www.hmco.com), and optionally the path to a file or resource residing on that server (trade). |
| Hosting |
A computer entity (company etc) plays host to a website ie allows a domain name and website owner to "rent" its space to store a website
|
Like someone renting land for a mobile home to be placed there. So a website owner can move their website to a different hosting service if they choose. Most hosting is provided for a fee, though there are web entities providing free hosting. |
| ISP |
Internet Service Provider |
A service that provides your computer with access to the Web
eg Bigpond, Ozenet, |
| Domain Manager (Pointer) |
A piece of software that links the domain name to somewhere on the world wide web |
Usually this is an inbuilt function of have a website separately hosted.
However then a domain name needs to be linked or 'pointed' to another website, or part of a website, then a Domain Pointer or Manager is needed to manage this transfer.
|
| Home Pages Websites |
Sections of a website that acts as if it is a separate website. Usually with software to enable a web page or small website to be built. |
That is a section not integrated into an overall website, but a part that uses another website as its home. Saves the cost of separate hosting services, but would need a Domain Name and Manager/ Pointer if one wanted to 'look like' one had one's own domain. |
WYSIWYG
Editor |
'What You See Is What You Get' editor |
A small toolbar that allows shortcuts for formatting a web page. Similar to Word documents tool bars to b-bold, u-underline, etc. |
